Police and border guards in central Vietnam have arrested three drug traffickers, seizing 13.2 kilograms of heroin bounded for Ho Chi Minh City and two illegal handguns.
Officers from the north-central province of Nghe An said Thursday the suspects had smuggled drugs from Laos to HCMC, news website VnEpxress reported.
Nghe An police had kept taps on the the ring for days. On Tuesday, they arrested Nguyen Hieu Song, 45, in Ninh Thuan Province with 13.2 kilograms of heroin on his southbound delivery.
The alleged ringleader Phan Dinh Tuan, 43, was arrested later the same day. The other member, Tran Quang Anh Dung, 45, was arrested in Ho Chi Minh City.
Police raid in Tuan's house in Nghe An found two handguns, a grenade, 17 bullets, and several drug-related documents. Possession of personal fireamrs is largely illegal in Vietnam.
According to news website ANTV, the suspects admitted to having trafficked another 9.9 kilograms of heroin into the city.
Police said they are investigating further in the role of each member and the amount of drugs in previous deliveries.
Vietnam has some of the world’s toughest drug laws. Those convicted of smuggling more than 600 grams of heroin or more than 2.5 kilograms of methamphetamine face the death penalty.
