Police in the southern province of Dong Thap have returned over VND200 million of cash and gold jewelries they recovered for an old beggar who was robbed a huge amount of gold last December.
A statement issued by Dong Thap Police on Tuesday said they have handed Nguyen Van Cung, the 87-year-old beggar, more than VND217 million (some US$10,700) including cash and 57 gold rings, a gold bracelet, and a gold necklace. The police also handed the old beggar VND9.8 million late last year.
Cung was robbed on the evening of December 21, 2013 when sleeping at a market in Dong Thap's Tam Nong District.
He claimed some young robbers took away his 25 taels of gold, then worth more than VND800 million ($38,000), that he kept in his ragged clothes. Most of them are said to be gold rings. Cung said he bought the gold with the sum he begged for during more than 20 years.
Five robbers, all male from 18 to 29 years of age, were soon arrested and are facing robbery charges as they have admitted to their act.
The group were said to have observed Cung for sometime and discovered the old man buying gold jewelries and keeping them in his ragged clothes.
After Cung reported the robbery, police arrested the five after noticing their abnormal spending.
Cung said he had earned the gold after several decades of begging. He reportedly spent little on meals and clothes.
Restaurant and café owners on the streets that he frequented usually gave away some of their portions to him.
News of his loss of gold broke out to the surprise of many people including his donors.
