Ho Chi Minh City traffic police arrested a young man who allegedly stole a camera from a German tourist at a park popular among foreigners in District 1 on Saturday, Tien Phong Newspaper reported.
At around 1:15 p.m. a team of Ben Thanh Traffic Police led by Senior Lieutenant Nguyen Quoc Hung was on patrol at the intersection of Tran Hung Dao and Pham Ngu Lao when they heard screams and saw a man chasing after another young man.
Hung jumped on a police motorbike and chased after the young man.
He managed to apprehend the man with the help of his colleagues.
At the Pham Ngu Lao ward police station, the man told police his name was Trinh Minh Long, 23, and that he resided in the ward. Police found an expensive camera in the bag Long was holding.
Long confessed that he had stolen the camera from a foreigner at 23/9 Park -- located at the intersection the cops were patrolling at the time -- minutes earlier.
At that time, a German tourist named Sebastian Werner, 28, came to the police station to report that he was robbed.
Werner said Long was the one who robbed his camera.
He then got his camera back.
Hung, the traffic police officer, has on several other previous occasions nabbed robbers who stole the belongings of foreign tourists.
