Police in the resort town of Hoi An arrested a Vietnamese man just three hours after he snatched the bag of a Japanese tourist in the old quarter area on Wednesday, Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper reported.
Dinh Cong Duc, 31, reportedly confessed to having snatched the bag of Fumio Omori, 64, to get money to buy drugs.
At around 10:15am, on Wednesday, Omori was riding a bicycle on Hai Ba Trung Street in the Hoi An old quarter when Duc, who was driving a motorbike, approached him and grabbed the bag Omori had placed in his bike’s basket.
Omori shouted out for help and nearby residents chased after Duc but he successfully fled the scene.
After being informed of the robbery, local police searched for Duc and nabbed him and confiscated his motorbike three hours later.
Duc told police he sold the bag in Hoi An's neighboring Da Nang City to fund his drug addiction.
He said he had committed a number of robberies against foreign tourists in Hoi An.
On Wednesday afternoon, Hoi An police returned the stolen property to the Japanese tourist.
