Police said Wednesday they have busted an illegal online gambling ring which allegedly processed VND5 trillion (US$235 million) in Thanh Hoa Province, arresting 11 people.
Among the arrestees is Duong Ba Lieu, 48, who is accused of organizing the ring. The others claimed they were just gamblers. Gambling is illegal in Vietnam.
Lieu told the police he had transfered two gambling websites from Tran Thi An, who lives in the nearby province of Nam Dinh.
Lieu then turned his house into the operations base for the syndicate, taking online bets from gamblers and selling accounts to sub-bookmakers for between VND 30 million and 200 million each time, police said.
Police said they have identified about 40 such sub-bookies in three northern provinces of Thanh Hoa, Nam Dinh and Ninh Binh.
They said they are looking for two more suspects involved in the ring, including Tran Thi An.
