The Ministry of Public Security arrested two police officers in Thai Nguyen and Ninh Binh Provinces Wednesday for allegedly receiving bribes from a wanted criminal.

Nguyen Duc Chinh, 27, a former officer with the Thai Nguyen Police Department, and Nguyen Huy Thang, 36, a former officer of the Ninh Binh Police Department, are being investigated on charges of "abuse of power to appropriate properties."

Previously, police arrested two of Chinh's coworkers, Nguyen Viet Hoa and Ma Khanh Linh, for their alleged involvement in the case.

The case started last year after Thai Nguyen police issued a  warrant for Tran Van Hung for illegally storing and using military weapons. Hung was also allegedly a member of a drug smuggling ring.

While Hung was still at large, he hid in the house of his mistress Dinh Thi Thanh Loan in Ninh Binh Province.

On the evening of March 19, 2012, Chinh, Hoa and Thang stormed into the house to arrest Hung.

Hung offered the officers VND2.5 billion (US$118,600) in exchange for his release.

The officers said they could not release Hung as their superiors had been informed of the arrest.

But they said they could release Loan, who was arrested on charges of "harboring criminals," and then tell higher authorities that the arrest was made elsewhere.

The two sides agreed that Hung would pay them VND2 billion for Loan's freedom.

Hung, however, exposed the police officers afterwards.
