Ho Chi Minh City police on Sunday arrested a woman and a man for robbing an Irish tourist in the city's backpacker area.
Nguyen Thi Hoang Oanh, 19, was driving her motorbike through the backpacker district with Le Thanh Son, 22, as her passenger in the early morning hours.
According to police, Oanh spotted Grace Angela, 25, of Ireland walking down Pham Ngu Lao Street at around 3 a.m, she swooped in and Son grabbed Angela's bag.
A group of District 1 cops chased after the couple.
Oanh sped up but she was nabbed by the officers in District 3 who returned the bag to the Irish tourist.
Police say Oanh is the sister of Nguyen Thi Hoang Yen, 22, who was also caught snatching a bag from a Russian tourist on Bui Vien Street in the early hours of August 19.
A team of plainclothes officers were patrolling the area when they spotted Yen and her passenger Pham Phuoc Thong, 20, driving around in a suspicious manner at 1:45 a.m.
The duo swept down on a Russian woman walking down Bui Vien Street and Thong snatched her bag. Yen dangerously zig-zagged down the road in an attempt to escape a squad of pursuing officers.
At the intersection of Bui Vien and Nguyen Cu Trinh streets, a pursuing cop kicked their bike, causing them to crash.
After the pair were scooped up and arrested, police returned the bag containing a cell phone, jewelry and money to their Russian victim.
Police said Yen and Oanh are among the most-notorious bag snatchers in the area, saying they have been monitoring them for a long time.
