A Hanoi  police officer was suspended Tuesday for allegedly shooting a high-school student with rubber bullets two days earlier.

Le Thanh Tung, chief of the Kim Chung Commune police, shot Dan Gia Bach, 16, in his right thigh Sunday night after seeing him in a field with his girlfriend.

Tung asked them to leave, saying the area was frequented by thieves.

When they were about to leave, Tung asked Bach for his motorbike documents, but the boy did not have them with him.

The officer then tried to grab Bach's bike key, but the latter stopped him, saying they would leave at once.

"Suddenly, the officer took out a gun and shot at my left thigh, but it missed," Bach said.

"When the second bullet was fired, I felt pain in my right thigh and it started bleeding"

Tung left after that.

Phan Van Bien, chairman of the Kim Chung Ward People's Committee, told Thanh Nien that Tung encountered Bach during his night patrol.

The case is being investigated further.
