Party authorities in the Mekong Delta province of Dong Thap Monday sacked a commune police official and removed him from the Party for hiring gangsters to kill his superior so that he could take over his job, Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper reported.

Investigations revealed that Ngo Hoang Hai, deputy chief of the Phu Dien Commune police, was behind an attack on Truong Van Cop last year.

On December 22 two men stormed into the commune police station and attacked Cop with machetes. But he fought them off and got away with minor injuries.

After their arrest the two gangsters confessed to the police that Hai had hired them.

Hai admitted to the police that he had done it so that he could spread rumors about Cop's involvement in fights and eventually replace him as police chief.

The two gangsters were fined VND2 million (US$95) but were not charged.
