A traffic police officer in the southern province of Binh Phuoc killed himself by drinking pesticide Tuesday after reportedly failing to pay off gambling debts, Lao Dong newspaper reported Thursday.

According to preliminary investigations, Sergeant Major Nguyen Van Duy, 24, went Monday evening to his grandparents' house to ask them for money to pay debts he had run up by betting on the recent European football championship.

His grandmother told him they did not have money. He reportedly went into the bathroom and did not come out for 30 minutes.

His grandparents went in and found him lying on the floor, while the bathroom reeked of pesticide.

Duy was rushed to hospital but he died there the following morning.

According to his family, he lost billions of dong on gambling, and recently they saw some gangsters come home to demand payment of the debt.
