The Supreme People's Procuracy, Vietnam's leading prosecutors' office, Tuesday pressed charges of abuse of power against an investigator in Hai Phong who failed to report a fraud case.
Colonel lieutenant Khuc Van Toan, 55, then with the Kien An District Police in the northern city, received seven documents in 2008 and 2009 confirming residents' tip-offs about organized fraud worth billions of dong.
He did not forward the case to his superior and instead accepted a bribe of VND40 million (approx. US$2,000) from a person involved.
The case was about violations in car rental contracts, in which the renters mortgaged the cars and disappeared with the money.
If convicted, Toan can be jailed to between one and seven years, under Vietnam's Penal Code.
