Police in the north-central province of Nghe An have charged a former Vietnamese police captain with drug trafficking.
Huynh Dung, the former head of the Bac Tra My District Police's Comprehensive Investigation Team, was caught with around 112 grams of heroin on the night of April 10.
Dung said he bought the narcotics near the Lao border and planned to resell them.
The officer will face between 15 and 20 years in prison if found guilty of a single count of storing or trafficking between 100 and 300 grams of solid heroin.
Those convicted of smuggling more than 600 grams of heroin (or more than 2.5 kilograms of methamphetamine) face the death penalty under Vietnam's stringent drug laws.
On the same day, police in the northern city of Hai Phong awarded VND20 million (US$948) to a team of investigators for seizing more than six kilograms of heroin from a smuggling ring operating along the Chinese border.
Nguyen Thanh Quan, 31, and Vu Nhu Tung, 37, were arrested with 4.56 kilograms of meth and 2,500 tablets (or 1,069 kilograms) of ecstasy.
Police say they discovered additional drugs stashed at Quan's residence.
The team began following the ring in March and made their arrests on April 10.
It was the city's largest drug seizure to date.
