Police in the southern Vietnamese province of Binh Phuoc Thursday arrested a police officer for allegedly selling mobile phones to prisoners.

Nguyen Van Hanh, 24, a private, first class, was in charge of detainees awaiting trial at a detention center in Dong Xoai town.

Last March he allegedly bought some mobile phones, SIM cards, and prepaid phone cards and sold them to some detainees.

His action severely affected police investigation since it enabled the detainees to contact each other and discuss testimonies and alibis.

He also reportedly sold phones to prisoners undergoing re-education at the center.

He collected two or three times the market price of the phones, getting their families to transfer money to his bank account.

The police are finding out how many phones and cards he sold.
