A commune chairman and a police chief in the Mekong Delta's Dong Thap Province have been dismissed for gambling during the Reunification and Labor Day holidays.

The dismissal was announced Tuesday as local police continued their investigation, news website VnExpress reported.

Huynh Huu Hiep, chairman of Hoa Thanh Commune People's Committee, and Nguyen Ngoc Tam, the commune police chief, were caught playing cards for money with their subordinates while guarding the committee office during the four-day break.

Police seized VND2.6 million (US$124) on the table at the time and more than VND9 million ($430) from the players.

Other people, including militia, will receive rebukes, police said.
