A Coast Guard colonel based in the south central province of Ninh Thuan has been censured for hitting an 11-year-old boy who had fought with his daughters, causing him to be hospitalized with a perforated eardrum.
Nguyen Van Dang, deputy head of the province Coast Guard unit, was hauled up by the province inspection unit for "losing his temper and causing adverse public opinion about himself and the unit," Tuoi Tre newspaper reported Friday.
Dang had slapped the boy, identified only as N.D.T., in November after suspecting that he had beaten his two daughters.
T. had to be hospitalized for nearly a week with a damaged ear and other injuries, prompting his family to lodge a complaint.
The local police are having the boy's condition tested at the Ho Chi Minh City office of the National Institute of Forensic Medicine, and the officer could face further punishment.
