Lawmakers in the central city of Da Nang are considering a proposal made by local authorities which would reward people who have remained sober for more than five years after completing drug rehab.

Under the proposal made by the city People's Committee, former drug abusers who meet the requirements would receive VND10 million (US$473) each.

The incentive scheme applies to those who completed their rehabilitation programs after March 1 of this year.

In the meantime, the city's authorities will award VND2 million to each of the 239 people who records show have already cut off the addiction within the required time before March 1.

The proposal was expected to be passed by the city's People's Council at a two-day session which got underway Tuesday.

A report on the news website Infonet of the Ministry of Information and Telecommunication quoted Van Huu Chien, chairman of the Da Nang People's Committee, as saying that most of people who successfully complete drug rehab face financial difficulties.

So, the authorities made the initiative hoping that it will encourage them to overcome difficulties and not resume their addiction, he said.
