The Hanoi police said the man suspected of killing a four-year-old girl and raping her eight-year-old sister last week did not show signs of mental disorder and was possibly just drunk at the time.

Dang Tran Hoai, 26, told them he had attended a wedding in Tu Liem District that noon and got drunk.

After leaving the party, he stopped to buy guavas from a street vendor, and stole the seller's knife. Some reports quote him as telling the police that he had a sudden urge to have sex.

When he passed a shop selling agricultural materials in Ha Dong District, he found the two girls alone inside.

He parked his motorbike outside and went into the shop which was also the shopkeeper's house.

He began to rape the elder girl and the younger one cried, so he slashed her repeatedly until she collapsed before continuing with his brutal act.

The girls' uncle, who lives nearby, said that when he saw Hoai's motorbike outside with the key still in the ignition, he told his daughter to go over and tell the bike owner.

But when she went there, she saw the little girl in a pool of blood and screamed for help.

Her father rushed to the shop and heard the older one crying in the bedroom. He ran into the room and found Hoai naked.

Hoai tried to slash his face before fleeing with a shirt over his genitals.

According to witnesses, Hoai ran up a hill owned by Tran Manh Hai shouting for help. Hai, who believed the blood-drenched man was being attacked by some people, allowed him to rest for a while.

From there Hoai ran down to the street and tried to steal a motorbike belonging to some of the girls' relatives who were taking them to hospital, but failed.

He broke into a car that was passing by and threatened the driver, but was soon caught by hundreds of locals who had gathered by then. They beat him up before handing him over to police.

Meanwhile, the younger girl died on her way to the hospital. The elder was admitted with shock and a bleeding vagina.

Tuoi Tre quoted doctors as saying she had critical injuries to her vagina, which needed a surgery that night, and needs to be in intensive care for a long period.

Hoai is unemployed and his wife gave birth to a child 10 days earlier. He faces charges of "murder" and "child rape," police said.
