Vietnam's maritime police last month chased away 2,988 Chinese fishing boats that encroached into the country's northern and central waters, Tuoi Tre newspaper reported Monday.

They seized five of them for conducting checks and recording their wrongdoing before releasing them, the newspaper said.

It was estimated that last year they caught foreign fishing boats illegally entering sovereign waters on 1,268 occasions.

Chinese official, research, and exploration ships were also found operating around Hoang Sa (Paracel) and Truong Sa (Spratly) Archipelagos on more than 100 occasions.

Many of them repeatedly violated Vietnamese sovereignty to threaten, disturb, and destroy economic activity, the report added.
