The Vietnamese company representing a Marshall Islands shipper said Tuesday rescuers have stopped looking for a Filipino crew member who fell off a ship in northern Vietnamese waters after all efforts to find him over the past week failed.
Do Xuan Hanh, sales director of the Northern International Carrier Agent of Vietnam Ocean Shipping Agency Corporation, said a missing person notice has been put up in the media, Lao Dong (Labor) newspaper reported.
Roldan Ruel Landich, 44, fell off the Astra Centaurus at 3:35 a.m. on February 27 near Hon Gai Island off Quang Ninh Province.
The vessel had docked in Hon Gai on February 24 with 15,400 tons of manganese ore.
It left for South Korea with the remaining 22 crew members after searching for him in vain.
Local authorities said rough seas and fog hindered the search initially.
The province port authorities would assist the ship's owner in dealing with the victim's family for issues like insurance, Hanh said.
