The construction of a monument to honor Vietnam's Heroic Mothers began in Tam Ky Town in the central province of Quang Nam Monday to mark the Day for War Martyrs and Invalids (July 27).

The 18.5-meter high sandstone monument depicting a heroic Vietnamese mother, will be modeled on a 106 year woman living in the province, Nguyen Thi Thu.

Mother Thu, who lives in Dien Ban District, Quang Nam Province, had nine children, one son-in-law and one grandchild who sacrificed their lives during the Vietnam War.

The statue will have plaques bearing the names of nearly 50,000 heroic mothers, and stories about their lives and their contributions to the nation plus pictures and artwork.

The VND81 billion (US$4.7 million) construction, designed by artist Dinh Gia Thang and architect Nguyen Luan, is expected to be completed in 2011.

At the groundbreaking ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan said the statue will represent the people's respect for the sacrifices made by thousands of heroic Vietnamese mothers.
