Agriculture minister Cao Duc Phat has approved a VND310-billion (US$14.9 million) project that will use vaccinations to fight the bird flu epidemic among fowls from now until 2012.

Under the project, household-owned poultry firms with less than 2,000 fowls as well as those belonging to military will be supported with 100 percent of vaccination fees.

Last week, the ministry's Animal Health Department reported that the flu (H5N1) had hit the northern provinces of Lang Son, Nam Dinh, Vinh Phuc and Thai Nguyen as well as the central highlands province of Kon Tum.

A week earlier, local media had reported the death of a 15-year-old girl, suspected of being infected with bird flu, in the central province Thua Thien Hue.
