Police in southern Vietnam said Friday they had arrested two Chinese men and a Vietnam woman for posing as police over the phone and asking at least three people to either send money to them or face legal threats.
Zheng Ke Xi, 40, Zheng Zhuen, 35, and their Vietnamese accomplice Le Thi Anh called three Vietnamese nationals from a landline and introduced themselves as police officers and prosecutors.
The victims were told that they had been involved in money laundering rings, police said.
They were then ordered by the alleged scammers to transfer around VND1.5 billion (US$70,257) for “further investigation.”
Ba Ria-Vung Tau have handed over the three suspects to state investigators, who are still tracking down five more Vietnamese members of the gang.
Xi and Anh told police they were only hired by Zhuen to do the job.
