Vietnam Airlines on Wednesday said that one of its pilots is held in Japan after he was accused of shoplifting.
The 56-year-old pilot, whose name has not been revealed, reportedly went shopping at a store near his hotel on Tuesday.
When he realized that he had forgotten his passport, he left his own bag and some items he had selected at the shop, saying he would return.
However, when he was about to leave the shop, he triggered the shop's anti-theft alarm. The shop staff reportedly found an item inside his pocket that he had not paid for.
Local police later detained him for investigation.
Vietnam Airlines executives told Tuoi Tre that they are working with Japan authorities to have him released on bail. They said his violation was “not too serious."
They believed that their pilot was just in a hurry and he had not intended to steal.
