A Vietnam Airlines passenger on Sunday was fined VND10 million (US$491) for making a bomb joke shortly before takeoff at the Cat Bi Airport in the northern city of Hai Phong, Nguoi Lao Dong newspaper reported.

Two days earlier, Nguyen Van Tuan, 38, of Quang Ninh Province reportedly told airport security officers that there was a bomb in his wallet during check-in for a Ho Chi Minh City-bound flight.

The officers immediately apprehended Tuan and brought him to an isolated area.

They evacuated other passengers out of the lounge and checked the surrounding area, but no bomb was found.
