A Vietnam Airlines steward was arrested after he was suspected of smuggling 50 iPhone 5s on a flight from Paris to Hanoi Sunday, news website VnExpress reported.
Bui Ngoc Tuan had just gotten off the plane at Noi Bai International Airport at 6:25 a.m. when custom officers found the 50 brand new phones in his suitcase.
The officers said Tuan had not declared the batch with customs.
They handed over the phones and Tuan to Hanoi police for investigation.
A police official said Tuan may face criminal charges given the value of the smuggled products.
A Vietnam Airlines spokesman said the carrier will strictly punish any employee who violates the law.
In Vietnam, an iPhone 5 16 GB is currently sold for VND22-28 million (US$1,042-1,326).
Since its launch on September 20, iPhone 5s are among the most sought after products in the country.
