A project to supply clean water and solar power to residents in Can Tho remote area started running Wednesday thanks to a US$50,000 grant from the US government.

The first stage of the project will supply water to 57 families living in Con Son (Son Islet) area and electricity to the area's "cultural house".

Just ten kilometers from Can Tho downtown, the people of Con Son have been living without electricity, water, schools, medical centers or streets for dozens of years.

During a visit to the project on Wednesday, the US Consul General in Ho Chi Minh City Le Thanh An said his unit will look for more financial support to build a primary school in the are and bring solar power to each household.
