Authorities in the north-central province of Nghe An said Monday a local fisherman found the wing of a Vietnam War-era US fighter aircraft while fishing last month.
Trinh Duc Dung of Cua Lo town spotted an object floating on the sea while fishing some 13 nautical miles off the coast of Quynh Luu District on July 27.
He and other fishermen fished it out of the water and realized it was an aircraft wing.
The alloy structure is 10 meters long.
After bringing it to shore, Dung planned to sell it as scrap metal, but local authorities got wind of his find and told him to keep the wing intact for studying.
Air force officers who saw it said the wing belonged to a US fighter aircraft shot down by the Vietnamese during the war.
It is on display at a wharf in Cua Lo Port.
