A bomb weighing 245 kilograms was successfully defused in the northern province of Tuyen Quang, Vietnam News Agency quoted a local official as saying on Friday.
According to Tran Van Du, chief of Ham Yen District's Military Command, the bomb dates back to the Vietnam War and was discovered roughly 50 centimeters underground by a familiy who were laying a foundation for their home.
Upon their alarming discovery, the family notified the local authorities.
By 6 p.m. Friday the bomb had been safely defused and relocated, the official told the newswire.
According to Du, many unexploded bombs and mines have been discovered throughout Ham Yen District, but the latest find represented their largest discovery, to date.
