Two police officials drown in central Vietnam

Two senior police officials drowned while bathing on a beach in the south central province of Binh Thuan on Friday, Nguoi Lao Dong newspaper reported.

At around 5 a.m., Major-General Phan Van Dong, deputy chief of Ministry of Public Security's Inspectorate, and Senior Lieutenant-Colonel Le Van Thang, deputy chief of An Giang Province Police Department's Inspectorate, bathed on a beach at Mui Ne tourism area in Phan Thiet City.

They were swept away by strong waves and drowned.

Rescuers recovered the two bodies two hours later.

Local police said the two may have fallen into a whirlpool while bathing.

The officials were attending a conference of police inspectors held in Binh Thuan from January 5 to 6.
