Two men have been arrested in Hanoi  as they allegedly attacked a traffic cop, strangled him and hit him on the head after being stopped for breaking traffic rules.

A Lao Dong report said car driver Dong Xuan Long, 46, of Hai Phong strangled Nguyen Hong Quan with his bare hands and banged the latter's head with his own.

Long first refused to stop his car and started to attack Quan when the latter reached him after a chase.

The beating happened in front of hundreds of travelers and several other traffic police officers in the team.

When Long was restrained by the police, his companion Nguyen Duc Trong, 30, stepped out of the car and attacked Quan again, pulling off his badges and parts of his shirt, and pushed him to the ground.

Police said Long has once served six years in jail for robbery.

Hoang Mai District Police are investigating the incident further.
