Two people were killed when a boat sank near the Ly Son Island on Friday due to strong winds and rough water.

The fishing vessel had been hired to ferry 32 passengers to the island off the central province of Quang Ngai.

Some of those aboard were visiting their families; others planned to attend a wedding party.

The journey ended after just 20 minutes at sea, when the boat sank roughly 3.6 kilometers from Ly Son.

Rescuers recovered the bodies of Tran Thi Trong, 42, and Pham Thi Thien, 45.

Everyone else was saved by five fishing boats who recovered the passengers in less than an hour.

Thirteen were hospitalized for shock.

Rough water caused by low temperature isolated the Ly Son Island for more than 10 days.

The waters finally settled on Friday.
