Two fishermen died when a whirlwind accompanied by big waves capsized two fishing boats off the coast of the central province of Phu Yen Monday, local agencies reported.

Whirlwinds and big waves, the effect of a tropical depression that strengthened from a low pressure area off the Hoang Sa (Spratly) Islands, also damaged at least 33 fishing boats in Phu Yen and the adjacent province of Binh Dinh.

The depression caused heavy rains and landslides in the central highlands province of Kon Tum as well, the reports said.
