A man and a woman on Saturday were sentenced to life for cheating another woman out of over VND218 billion (US$11.5 million) in the central highlands of Gia Lai, a local court heard.

Mai Quy Tho, 40, and Pham Thi En, 42, enticed Phan Thi Hong in the provincial capital of Pleiku to lend them the money for investment into major projects from March, 2007 to June, 2008, according to the prosecutors.

Hong mobilized the money from more than 60 others, it noted.

Tho and En were put under investigation when Hong alarmed police in July, 2008. But Tho wasn't taken into custody until last month.

Mai Dieu Kieu Trinh, Tho's girlfriend, was also sent to prison for 14 years for involvement in the crime.

All the defendants were asked to pay Hong nearly VND74 billion in total compensation.
