Two farmers in a rural village in the central province of Quang Ngai died and seven others were hospitalized after spraying herbicide on their cassava fields, online newspaper Dan Tri reported Thursday.
Last Sunday, 28-year-old Dinh Van Tuc of Bo Nong Village, Son Ky Commune, Son Ha District, sprayed eight herbicide tanks on his cassava fields.
His mother-in-law Dinh Thi Dat helped him with the farm work.
After returning home, both of them collapsed and died.
According to local authorities, they were poisoned by toxic substances in the herbicide tanks.
The same day, seven farmers of the village were hospitalized after spraying herbicide in their cassava fields.
They were discharged on Wednesday after three days of treatment.
Local authorities said many farmers in Son Ky Commune have been using herbicides without taking safety precaustions including wearing protective clothing and facial masks. They were also not spraying the weedkillers in accordance with technical guidelines, they said.
