Two women were killed and five soldiers are missing when a boat carrying 34 people sank in the central province of Quang Nam Sunday.
According to Hoi An Town's People's Committee, the boat from Tan Hiep Commune island was sunk by waves when it was less than one kilometer from the town's coast.
People on board, 29 soldiers of the provincial military headquarters and five people who hitchhiked, grabbed lifeboats and oil tanks when escaping the boat. Upon receiving the information, the provincial military headquarters assigned four boats to rescue the victims.
However, a teacher and a health worker, both female, drowned. Five soldiers remain missing, authorities said.
Bnuoch Cruop, one of the soldiers on board, told Thanh Nien that he and his comrades just joined military in September. They were on their way to the headquarters, preparing for a training session in the central city of Danang, when the accident happened.
"The boat ran well until it was about one kilometer from the coast. When it tilted, we still heard the engine working, but just a couple of minutes later, it was sunk by waves," Cruop said.
Local agencies are investigating the cause. Rescue efforts are still underway.
