Two dead as tank truck plunges into northern Vietnam river

Two people in a tank truck died after the truck plunged into a river in the northwestern province of Lai Chau on Saturday, Nguoi Lao Dong newspaper reported.

The tank truck owned by fuel distributor Petrolimex was traveling on National Highway 18 when it plunged into the Nam Na River in the mountainous district of Sin Ho at around 3:15 p.m.

Pham Ngoc Thoang, the 39-year-old driver, and Bui Thi Dung, a 56-year-old woman who was in the truck's cabin, died immediately.

Rescuers recovered the two bodies from the river more than three hours after the accident.

Initial investigations showed the driver may have fallen asleep and lost control of the vehicle, according to police.
