Rescue workers recovered Saturday the bodies of two boys who had drowned in a river in the central province of Ha Tinh a day earlier, the Nguoi Lao Dong newspaper reported.

Bui Viet Anh and Nguyen Quang Phong, both 10 years old, went missing after they were spotted among a crowd watching a boat race on the Hoi River in Cam Xuyen Town.

Locals said the two boys both fifth graders at the Cam Xuyen Town Primary School and other schoolmates rode bicycles to the Hoi Bridge over the river to watch the annual race at around 6 a.m. on Friday morning.

They said there were three to five boys in the group. The boat race was among activities to celebrate the National Day (September 2).

When the race ended more than four hours later, locals found two bicycles and some personal belongings on the river bank, while Anh and Phong were nowhere to be found.

Several residents jumped into the water to find the boys, but in vain.

Divers later arrived at the scene to search for the missing.

Their bodies were found early the following morning in the river, some 500 meters away from the spot where the boat race had taken place.
