Two 11-year-old students drowned Monday shortly after returning from a ceremony to celebrate the start of a new school year at their school in the southern province of Dong Nai, the Nguoi Lao Dong (Laborer) newspaper reported.

Phung Nhat Mui and Luu Thi Phuong, both sixth graders of Nguyen Trai Secondary School in Cam My District, and two other schoolmates visited the house of Ho Thi Bich Nga, 12, after the ceremony.

The pair later bathed in a pond in the garden, and drowned.

After hearing their call for help, locals jumped into the pond to rescue them but they were dead by the time they were pulled ashore.

In Vietnam, a new school year is usually marked by a ceremony at schools across the country on September 5.
