Six people were killed and two others were critically injured when a truck crashed into a market in the Mekong Delta province of Hau Giang early Monday morning.
Witnesses said the truck which was traveling from Can Tho City to Ca Mau Province smashed into a group of vendors and shoppers gathered in front of the Hiep Thanh Market at roughly 4:45 am.
Five people died on the spot, while the other succumbed to critical injuries after being admitted to Can Tho Central General Hospital. The two injured victims remain at the hospital.
Vo Thai Hong, deputy head of police division in Nga Bay Town, said they have yet to identify all of the victims.
The driver, meanwhile, fled the scene after the accident.
The market is located at the end of the Phung Hiep bridge, which opened to traffic about two months ago. Since solid barriers weren't erected around the market, locals typically gather along the street as they buy and sell farm produce.
