A Ho Chi Minh City court on Wednesday sentenced a local man to eight years in prison for running over a girl in a fatal traffic accident last May.
Dang Huu Anh Tuan, 25, was also ordered to pay VND75 million (US$4,000) in compensation to 17-year-old Nguyen Thi Hoi's family.
According to the indictment, on the night of May 14, Tuan, who was driving a container truck, hit Hoi's motorbike on Tan Phu District's Luy Ban Bich Street and ran over her legs.
Although Hoi cried for help and passersby asked him to back the car for them to pull her out, Tuan continued to drive forward, running over Hoi again.
Tuan then backed the car and ran her over for a third time, according to the indictment.
He was apprehended by local people as he tried to run away.
Hoi succumbed to her injuries at a local hospital.
While Tuan's deed needed strict punishment, the HCMC People's Court said he was being given a shorter sentence than the prosecutors had asked for because he had a good record and had paid part of the compensation to the victim's family.
Tuan had told the court that he had panicked and tried to escape after he hit the girl the first time.
