Ho Chi Minh City police on Monday arrested a truck driver for allegedly attacking a traffic police officer after ignoring an order to stop, Tuoi Tre newspaper reported.
Nguyen Bao Toan, 37, was spotted by three traffic cops who were patrolling the Hanoi Highway in District 9 at around 9 a.m. as his truck was on the wrong lane.
The officers signaled him to stop.
Toan was asked to produce papers but he did not say anything. He came back to the truck and jumped into the cabin.
The officers thought he was about to come back with his papers so they did not follow him.
Toan suddenly drove away.
Senior-lieutenant Vo Van Thoai jumped on a police motorbike and chased after the truck.
He caught up with the truck near an overpass. As Toan tried to drive away, he held on to the cabin’s window and ordered Toan to stop.
Toan continued to drive for several hundreds of meters until he had to stop due to traffic congestion.
Thoai, still hanging outside the cabin, tried to reach his hand to the cabin to turn off the engine.
Toan pushed him and he fell off.
Toan jumped off the truck and started to punch and kick Thoai.
Other police officers showed up and arrested Toan.
Thoai was brought to a nearby hospital to treat his injuries.
