Truck driver arrested for deadly head-on collision in central Vietnam

The container truck and the passenger bus that were involved in a deadly head-on crash Tuesday

The police have arrested the driver of a container truck for allegedly causing a head-on collision with a passenger bus that killed five people and injured eight others in Thua Thien-Hue Province Tuesday.

Ton That Tung, 36, of Ho Chi Minh City, will be investigated for "flouting driving regulations and causing extremely severe consequences."

The accident happened at around 1 p.m. on National Highway 1A in Phong An Commune, Phong Dien District.

The passenger bus driven by Le Dinh Chinh, 32, was heading north to Ha Tinh Province nearby from Hue when it was hit by Tung's truck which was traveling on the wrong side of the road.

The crash caused both vehicles to plow off the road and into a field, the front of the bus was smashed and the container was dislodged from the truck. All 13 victims had been in the bus.

Bus driver Chinh of Ha Tinh Province and Hoang Dinh Trieu, 50, and Nguyen Thi Huong, 45, both of Hai Phong, were killed on the spot.

Nguyen Thi Minh, 56, of Ha Tinh died on the way to hospital.

Tran Thi Luu, 57, of Thua Thien-Hue Province died at the Hue Central Hospital.

The eight injured were treated at the Hue Central Hospital and Northern Thua Thien-Hue Hospital.
