City workers cut down number of large, century-old trees in front of the Saigon Opera House on Tuesday morning to make way for Saigon's first underground metro line station, VnExpress reported.
All the trees were located in Lam Son Square which is essentially comprised of the paved area that extends from the front steps of the opera house.
The HCMC transport department closed a section of Le Loi Street in District 1 as workers chopped down the trees.
The department had announced plans to close Le Loi street between Pasteur to Dong Khoi to vehicle traffic starting at 7am on July 22 as work began on the Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien metro system, which will run along 19.7 kilometers between Ben Thanh Market in District 1 and Suoi Tien Park in District 9.
The Municipal Theatre station is to be 190 meters long and 26 meters wide. It will have four floors.
