Traffic police threatened, assaulted in northern Vietnam

Police in the northern province of Lang Son have arrested a man who threatened to assault two traffic police officers with a broken bottle on June 7 before fleeing.

A video posted on YouTube showed that the young man was stopped for not wearing a helmet.

He used foul language against the police, broke a glass bottle into two to use as a weapon and threatened to attack the police. He also managed to get an iron chain from a local's house and continue threatening the cops in front more more than ten residents of Dong Dang town.

The video showed the police trying to avoid being hit every time the man threatened to throw the bottle or the chain.

One of the police officers called for support, but no one came before the man climbed on his motorbike and left.

Lang Son police said the man, whose identity has not been revealed, was arrested and detained pending the filing of charges for opposing officials on duty.

Also on June 7, several police officers in Hanoi were severely assaulted by a 19-year-old boy and his father after he was stopped for breaking a red light.

Vu Xuan Hung only stopped after running for a while and then challenged the police. He failed to present a driving license, and then called his father on the phone saying that some police officers had beaten him.

His father arrived after around 15 minutes later, asking the police to explain the beating.

Even as he spoke, he took Hung's crash helmet to hit a sergeant major, who was then beaten repeatedly by the father and son.

The officer has been hospitalized. Hung and his father have been detained.
