A tornado struck the Mekong Delta Wednesday morning, killing two people in Soc Trang and Bac Lieu Provinces and leaving 61 injured.

A total of 767 houses were reported damaged in both provinces.

Pham Thi Be, 71, died when her home collapsed in Bac Lieu, while Tieu Thanh Sang, 33, was crushed to death by an uprooted tree.

Many of the injured in Bac Lieu were admitted to hospital with head injuries and broken bones.

Ho Van Phung, the owner of a rice mill worth billions of dongs in Soc Trang, said "Our family saw the terrible winds, so we hid under a bed. We could hear our house collapse minutes later. The rice mill collapsed soon after that."

Provincial authorities have sent out forces to support the affected families. They said the number of damaged homes could be higher since rescue workers have been kept out of certain areas by heavy rain and wind.
