Lucrative tobacco smuggling in Vietnam has given rise to an army of transporters who will stop at nothing to bring the contraband into the country from Cambodia.
A video clip recorded in Dong Thap Province, which borders Cambodia's Pray Veng Province, showed just that.
Two smugglers deliberately crashed their bikes into a row of bikes formed by the police to block a road in Tam Nong District, Dong Thap. Both fell and were arrested.
Colonel Duong Huu Nghia, chief of Tam Nong police, said tobacco smugglers always ran at high speed, threatening local people's life.
He also rejected concerns that the roadblock may harm innocent motorists, saying that the police always issue a warning in advance.
Roughly one billion packs of cigarettes are smuggled into Vietnam every year, which causes a tax loss of about VND9 trillion ($416 million), the Vietnam Tobacco Association said in April.
