Forest rangers have seized a large quantity of valuable timber from a truck that was found overturned near a national park in the Central Highlands province of Dak Lak.
An Ninh Thu Do newspaper quoted Tran Van Thanh, acting director of the Yok Don National Park, as saying Wednesday a total 23.7 cubic meters of timber were found in the truck.
The driver of the truck reportedly fled the scene after the vehicle overturned some two kilometers away from the park's Checkpoint No.11.
The wood was identified as being from Xylia xylocarpa, a perennial tree found in South and Southeast Asia, whose pulp is also used for making wrapping paper.
According to the rangers, the timber is worth an estimated VND700 million (US$33,400).
But they were unable to explain how the truck had gone past another checkpoint without being noticed.
Thanh said park authorities are working with the local police to investigate.
