A three-year-old boy is presumed dead after his father drove into a drainage canal during a storm in the Central Highlands province of Kon Tum on Monday, Vietnam News Agency reported.
Ngo Hoang Ha of Kon Tum City was sitting on the back of his father's motorbike when the pair fell into a canal that had been swollen by heavy rains at around 5:45 p.m.
Ha's father, Ngo Quang Dat, 31, survived by grabbing hold of the sluice gate. Ha was swept away by the floodwaters.
After the rain subsided, nearby residents pulled the motorbike out of the canal. Rescuers were still searching for Ha.
Area residents say they shouted warnings to Dat to avoid the flooded canal but he could not hear due to the heavy rains.
Thirty minutes before the accident, another motorist had fallen into the canal; he also survived by grabbing hold of the sluice gate.
The residents said that Ko Pa Ko Long Street, where the accident happened, usually flooded during heavy rains.
Authorities, however, never posted warning signs above the street's open drainage canals.
