Three men died and one other was seriously injured Friday when they were working in an underground water sump at a house under construction in Ho Chi Minh City.
At 1:30 p.m., Bui Thanh Quang, supervisor at the construction site, asked Pham Van Dong, Vo Cong Dinh, and Nguyen Minh Tam to climb down the 50-centimeter wide and 2.5-meter deep tank to remove formworks, according to other men working at the site.
As Quang didn't hear any sound or see the workers climb out after a while, he decided to get into the tank himself. But Quang also did not return.
Knowing something was amiss, other workers went in and moved the four men out. But Quang, Dong and Dinh had already died. The other man, Tam, was admitted to the hospital in critical condition.
Initial investigations show that the workers died of suffocation, the police said.
The house, located on Hiep Nhat Street in Tan Binh District, is being built by the Tien A Development Construction Company.
