Three schoolgirls drown in south-central Vietnam

Rescuers recovered the bodies of three 14-year-old schoolgirls who drowned in a river in the south central province of Phu Yen on Wednesday.

According to local police, a group of five girls and four boys went to the Ba River in Phu Hoa District to bathe around around 2:30 p.m.

As they played in the water, one of the girls fell into a deep-water area. The other girls rushed to help but they were all swept away by the water.

The boys swam to the site and rescued two girls Le Thi Thuy Hang and Pham Thi Hao while the other three - Nguyen Thi Phuong, Phung Thi Thu Thao and Nguyen Thi Yen Nhi - drowned.

All the girls are 8th graders at the Nguyen The Bao Secondary School in Hoa Thang District.
